Conrad among September additions

After Monday night’s win over the Marlins, the Braves announced that Brooks Conrad, Luiz Valdez and Clint Sammons will join the big league club when the rosters are expanded on Tuesday.

Conrad instantly became a fan favorite with the energy he displayed while hitting .344 with two homers in 14 games with Atlanta earlier this year.   The gritty infielder’s  power potential could bolster Atlanta’s bench.

Sammons will provide the Braves a third catcher for the season’s final month and Valdez, who has notched 26 saves and posted a 3.33 ERA in 57 appearances for Triple-A Gwinnett this year, will provide bullpen depth.

I’m surprised the Braves didn’t elect to bring up another OF’er. Oh well. Good for Brooks and Valdez. And Sammons too, though I feel like he’s just there so Bobby will be able to pinch-hit with David Ross. I’m really glad that Conrad is getting the call, though.

PWHjort, Are you glad Conrad gets the call so Braves fans can shut up about him, cause I’ll be honest, thats why I am.Wheres Brian Barton? I know Bobby doesn’t want to bring up someone he is not going to use, but he has got speed, and so does Blanco, but Barton never got a chance. He just was caught stealing (questionable call), and then sent down…

I’m glad for that reason plus because I think he’s a useful player. Another OF will probably be up soon, though.

How many players can a team bring up on Sept. 1?

Also, I’d like to add that I think Norton should be released when they have to make room on the 40 man for Huddy’s return. Seriously, I know he’s versatile from a utility standpoint, but we can’t afford to keep letting him strikeout in key situations all the time.

Heck, most PITCHERS have a better AVG and OBP than Norton.

You can promote up to 5 players, the Braves did not promote an outfielder due to Schafer’s surgery. There are 3 outfielders at Gwinnett and they are in their own post-season push. The Braves had good news from McLouth who could return this week and decided to let the youngsters compete for a title. The Braves have Matt Diaz, Garrett Anderson, Ryan Church, Reid Gorecki, Nate McLouth, Omar Infante, Kelly Johnson, and Greg Norton who have outfield experience. Granted, Kelly and Greg have not played an inning in the outfield this year, and McLouth and Church are gimpy. But, having Conrad join the team allows Omar Infante to be a full time outfielder if needed.

If you’re looking for who the Braves will call up in the next couple weeks look for the guys already on the 40 man roster. I don’t think they will bring up anybody that would cause a roster move, and I don’t think they are going to start anybody else’s “clock” running. Heyward would be the only exception, but with his heel issue, he will probably have to wait for next season.
So, Barton, Blanco, Canizares, Diory Hernandez, Acosta, JoJo Reyes are the guys in the running, barring a late season deal that would free up a roster spot, which could always happen.

Is TIM HUDSON eligible for the post-season? From what I could tell, he wasn’t activated until today, which I think makes him ineligible? Can anyone clarify?

I’m sure Blanco and Brandon Jones will be added to the roster as far as outfielders go. Of course, hopefully McLouth and Church get healthy soon.

Hudson could be eligible for the post season roster since he was on the 60-day disabled list on August 31. A player who is on the 60-day DL at that time can replace a player on the active 26 man (or postseason) roster that plays the same position when he comes off the DL.

“Its opens the floodgates for some god awful comments”Ain’t that the truth…

I was curious about Blanco as well — glad Conrad is back, and anxious to see Hudson pitch. Really anxious. Can’t help but feel another big win tonight might put us on a roll, maybe reel off a few straight and really make people take note and consider the Braves contenders for at least the WC.

Bringing Conrad up is especially important because now they can rest Chipper once in a while. Prado moves to third and Conrad plays second on those days. I also agree that Norton needs to go. It’s embarrassing to watch him at the plate.

I also agree that Norton needs to be released. Let Jair or Javy pinch hit instead of Norton. Any one here old enough to remember the White Sox had a pitcher by the name of Peters who was one of their regular pinch hitters back in the 70s?

I don’t understand why so many people are hating on Norton. He is one of best strikeout specialists in the majors. But all joking aside he needs to be released, but I don’t see that happening because for some reason Cox thinks he can hit.

Dear Braves,
Cut Greg Norton!
Your friend,
Longball

i love the fact that Brooks is coming back provides some much needed rest for Chipper who desperately needs a day off or two. Conrad has pop. I agree with all those that say Norton needs to be released. Brandon Jones I feel should come up to help Garret in te OF. Hopefully Nate and Church get back soon. Matty Diaz has been the team MVP no question. Im rooting for HUddy tonight hell pitch well and the Braves will get on a tear. We will win the WC!!!!!! GO BRAVES!!!!!

BobfromChi-town: Gary Peters, eh? Yes, I remember him. LH pitcher and a darn good hitter. Didn’t Dick Donavon, a pitcher and Peters’ teammate, hit well, too?

im most excited about this Valdez kid i know he has the blow save against colorado but when you throw 95-98 mph you need to be in the majors if your producing he just stretches out an already dominating bullpen and gives bobby more options in the middle of the game plus we can afford to give peter more days off with this kid…..Conrad was unreal upon his call up to the majors and figures to let bobby maybe rest yunel once in a while if that happens as for Clint Sammons i dont agree with calling him up why not add somebody like Diory Hernadez? and have Omar be and outfielder permantley for the rest of the way? Brandon Jones is what he is im not to excited about him anymore…….

and if we were looking for Right handed power why not Barbaro Canizares? right

i agree with the writer to release norton 136 and slipping. But you need to realize that it is bobby that keeps using him in key situations when their are other choices. It was bobby who chose to keep him over the red hot conrad. we should release norton but at the same time if we are to win we need to release bobby too

norton didn’t hit last year until he got some playing time and consective at bats, i think that’s what he has needed this year but has had none. if he’s not going to get the chance at some regular at bats then release him. i don’t know why the players love bobby so much but they do. as long as their on his good side. never cared for his managing, he’s good for 5 to 10 losses every year. leaving a picther in to give up 8 runs. oh well
