Prado will miss at least a week

The Braves seemingly got some good news Saturday, when they determined that Martin Prado has a fractured right pinky finger that may cause him to miss just seven-to-10 games.

Braves manager Bobby Cox said he will wait at least another day before determining whether Prado will be placed on the disabled list.  Once the All-Star second baseman proves he can grip a bat, he’ll be cleared to begin swinging again.

“If anybody can get back in the lineup quickly, it’s him,” Cox said of Prado, who suffered the fracture while sliding head first toward the plate during the 10th inning of Friday night’s win over the Reds.

The Braves have technically called Prado’s injury a stable avulsion fracture of PIP joint of his right pinky finger.

*at least* a week.

Get better soon, Martin. We need you. I’m glad the news isn’t worse, but I sure hate to see the Braves without his bat in the lineup for any time at all.

Losing Martin is going to hurt. However, we do have a UTL player named Omar Infante that will be able to provide the defense and the average that is comparable to what Martin had been doing since the 2nd Half started.

My concern is Melky in CF and Glaus at 1B. I would love to see the braves get in on a Brad Hawpe. He can play RF or 1B and while he wouldn’t set the world on fire, he would be an upgrade offensively from those two guys. When September gets here, I PRAY that Freeman gets a call up to get a taste of MLB

I must confess I was way more concerned than that diagnosis. I was afraid he may have torn ligaments or tendons in his hand or wrist. This is probably gonna affect him for a little while but won’t be too bad. We are sure gonna miss him though.

Well, Ludwick is gone… didn’t even know he was available. I sure do wish we we’re getting better right about now…

I really hope they DL Prado. We all watched heyward play at 50% for six weeks – big mistake. Play Infante every day for a couple of weeks and bring up Diory to back-up Gonzo. This injury will definitely effect his hitting if it is not healed. Plus, Infante is only a small downgrade at this point. They have both played fantastic this year.

I am really glad they are not going to try to acquire a Cody Ross type – no upgrade. I am still waiting for Hinske to play 1st against righties with Diaz in left field. Glaus has not homered in a month and looked horrible last night. I don’t think he is healty and Hinske and Diaz have been great. And yes, Diaz proved last year he could hit righties.

With this injury, I don’t think that we should be worried about Martin getting worse after his rest. However, his hand is going to hurt the rest of the season, and I wonder if that will be a detriment to his spectacular hitting this season. Let’s make a move for a 1B/OF bat. Thank goodness for Omar Infante….

Mark, has the lineup for today’s game been listed yet?

Speedy, it’s listed in the next thread

Thanks Bill…

After reading more about Prado’s injury I have become really worried again about the long term ramification of this injury. Despite the 1 week prognosis and Bobby’s usual optimism, this thing is gonna take a while to heal. It is basically a fracture which occurs when the ligament tears loose a small piece of bone, in this case it is in the main joint of the pinky finger. With the amount of top hand that Prado uses in his swing, I think we are gonna see a significant amount of difficulty for him to maintain that swing. Even if the finger is immobilized it is gonna be impacting against his left hand during his swing, causing pain and risking re-injury. There is really nothing that they can do to “set” this fracture. The bone has to reattach on it’s own. It is much like a certain type of ankle sprain that rips the bone loose when stress is placed on the ligament. This isn’t a particularly good prognosis, despite how the Braves may be spinning it.

Braves acquire Wilkin Ramirez from Detroit. Way to go Frank.

I hope this comment isn’t taken the wrong way, but this Prado incident may be a blessing in disguise for this team. Wren was set on standing still, but with Prado out of the lineup for at least a week, it may force him to make a move.It should go without saying that I really hope Prado gets well soon and I certainly wouldn’t wish a broken finger on anyone, and he’ll be incredibly missed in the lineup in the next week (or more, who knows how long this will bother him…) but Frankie needed a push… and this might just be it.1 hour left… make something happen wren…

I can certainly live with that.

Another typical Frank Wren trade I guess. Ankiel Bats Left wont help us with our problem against RHP. He strikes out alot, which we can kind of afford. Has some pop and plays decent defense. coming off 70 days on DL, hope he is healthy. He is from the neighborhood here, so a plus for me.

Farnsworth is having his best year in a while, hope it continues. He appears to be healthy this year. He adds another 4.5 Million in payroll to an already stacked Bullpen. Where did Frank get the idea, we needed Bullpen help? Definitely an upgrade from Chavez though. Making up for Winter mistakes.

This trade is kind of a yawner for me.

I’m just glad we upgraded. Not star potential, but Farnesworth replaces Chavez, which is a huge upgrade and Ankiel is better at the plate than anything else we were going to throw out there for the rest of the year.

I only submitted that post once. Damn MLB is messed up

FRANK, YOUR OTHER RIGHT HAND!!!!!!!!!!

Look, Farnesworth isn’t our closer and may not even be our setup guy with how Venters is pitching. And Billreef, a team, especially down the stretch *always* needs bullpen help.

The trade is fine. Ankiel can help them against righties and Melky can play against tough lefties – not bad. Plus, having a plus arm is great in the OF. Now CF and RF will both have great arms (except when infante plays RF)

Bill – keep in mind that a lot of the struggles against lefties were when Diaz was out. I think the line-up is much better now with a healthy heyward(or infante) and diaz.

Anybody notice David Ross has 0 HRs? strange – he has great power, but I guess he just has not played too much. Still a great back-up.

The bullpen is now the best in the league.

I read that the Braves are going after Figgins from the Marniers but were denied but i have a feeling that they will pick him up on waivers and place him in Cf bc he can play a decent CF

Bill,
Mark listed the injury as a “stable” fracture of the PIP joint (that is the closest joint to your knuckle). If is stable, that means that there is a small hairline fracture in the area. It will take at least 7-10 days for that fracture calus over. Once it has healed enough, he can play no problem. But, like i posted earlier, my concern is the discomfort that he WILL feel for the rest of the season will alter his swing. Let’s hope that doesn’t happen. He might have a slight strength in grip, but pain level will probably be the greatest concern from here out. We got lucky in two different ways here: 1. it’s the pinkie (5th phalange), which will probably not alter his strength much, 2. it is stable, if it was displaced we would be up the creek without a paddle.

Wow, Farnsworth and Ankiel….and the best part of the deal…Jesse Chavez!!

Not big name difference makers, but great deal considering what Atlanta gave up to acquire them.

The mlb.com comment system is caving in right now…I’m iffy on this trade.. it obviously isn’t a blockbuster but I’m generally positive on the move, even though I’m sure billreef will tell us all how much it sucks. My guess is Ankiel will platoon in center (sitting for lefties… which doesn’t help our lefty offense…).I don’t love Farnsworth, but I like him better than Chavez. We gave up talent in Blanco that was sitting on the bench, and Collins who we just got for Escobar… so the way I see it, we upgraded in 2 slots without giving up much in return. The problem isn’t really with this move, it’s the lack of a move that matters. The lineup is just not effective vs lefties and we still don’t have a power bat in the lineup with Glaus quickly deteriorating into an automatic out.

All this talk about platoons???? Ankiel hits for higher avg. against lefties. Sorry to bust your bubble boys.

Will be interesting to see how they use Ankiel and Melky in CF. Farnsworth will provide value simply with his presence. If they hadn’t added a reliever that Cox could trust, Moylan, Saito and Venters would have been gassed by the time the season ended.

Ankiel and Melky are both better against RHs. Early guess is that Melky gets the starts against tough LHPs. Ankiel is the superior defender.

Was looking forward to seeing what Collins might provide. But it was certainly worth parting ways with him to get two Major League ready pieces who could make a difference down the stretch.

Really nothing lost by dealing Chavez and Blanco.

Bill – maybe they need to hire you s GM?

“Ankiel hits for higher avg. against lefties. Sorry to bust your bubble boys.” – billreefUm… bill.. I don’t know wtf you’re talking about. “With this deal, Ankiel is likely to sit against left-handed starters given his career .239/.279/.402 line against them.” – ESPN. The stats: He’s .302 this year vs righties, .172 vs lefties this year. If you’re referencing career numbers, He’s about even in average over the past few years, but has a higher OBP and SLG vs righties.

Glad to hear we optioned Blanco and Chavez to our AAAA affiliate in KC, and brought up Ankiel and Farnsworth.

Well that’s an idea whose time has come. I think even I could find a RH power bat after looking for 2 years. Just a guess.

Boy Bobby sure is good at removing a pitcher after he has given up the 4 run inning. Wouldn’t it be nice if he removed one some time before all the damage is done?

Bill – I have Frank Wren’s address, we can go to his house and force him to sign a document stepping down as GM and hiring you as the new GM. But, you have to do a favor for me: Promise me that after 14 years of winning you wont hire a bum to break your team?

Braves offensive woes continue. Shame on Wren for not acquiring a big bat, but the move he did was a good one in itself. Just doesn’t upgrade the offense enough I think.

Hope Bobby starts helping by either moving Chipper to 2nd or 6th in the order, moving Heyward to three, and dropping Glaus to 7th (or preferably send him to the DL so Hinske can get regular playing time.

1. Infante
2. Jones
3. Heyward
4. McCann
5. Hinske
6. Gonzalez
7. Diaz
8. Ankiel/Cabrera
9. Pitcher

Ok, I totally called the Jesse Chavez part of this last night.

Today’s loss was a bad loss, and that makes at least 3 games on this road trip that SHOULD have been wins.

Trade predictions. Gregor Blanco will get some PT in KC and become a solid ML Center fielder. (We should have kept him)

Jesse Chavez is exactly what we think he is. Better for what is left of his career in KC though – good trade for him.

Kyle Farnsworth WILL solidify the leagues already best bullpen.

Ankiel – well, at least the braves have a position player they can move to pitch the 8th and the 9th when they are already losing by 10 runs.

Against Righties:
Prado: 4
Heyward 9
Jones 5
McCann 2
Hinske 3
Ankiel 7
Gonzalez 6
Cabrera 8

Against Lefties
Prado 3
Infante 4
Jones 5
Diaz 7
McCann 2
Gonzalez 6
Heyward 9
Cabrera 8

O Boy.

Thank you Ryan Zimmerman… and an even bigger THANK YOU to Brad Lidge. Our lead remains at 3.5.
It’s amazing what happens when you have guys in your lineup to drive in runs night in and night out. Sadly, I’m not sure if I remember what that feels like. I’m amazed at how bad the Nats record is. Morgan, Zimmerman, Willingham, Dunn, Morse. If they had one or two more decent starters, they would be legit!

I am glad to see Chavez gone but i didnt wanna see Gregor go i mean they could have sent anyone schafer or Matt young or hicks in this trade but too each his own. But i have a feeling that the braves might be making a wiaver deal and it might mean bringing in a name that ryhmes with Higgins.

So we at least did inquire about Dunn. Can’t say Wren didn’t try to get him.

One common them of this blog, which I keep reading is Glaus has been awful and is not healthy. Can we please play Hinske (or even Conrad) at first base?? Diaz can hit righties just fine.. I think even bill agrees with this (although I can’t be sure). I hope Ankiel can be at today’s game. They can even play Melky and Ankiel and allow Hinske to play first base. Glaus has become an automatic out and cannot drive the all. I realize he was fantastic in may, but he has been equally as bad in July. He reminds me of KJ and Frenchy from last year. When he comes to the plate, I cringe. Maybe he needs a DL stint to get better??

Need this W for a 4-5 road trip. Not good, but they were due for a small bad stretcch. Let’s just end it now….

I agree, acziffer. Glaus doesn’t even look like he did in May and the first part of June… heck, even though he wasn’t hitting much in April, he looked more healthy then. And you can tell he’s fighting it with the way he reacts after hitting meager pop-ups or grounders. The team should just DL him, let him heal properly, and bring him back for the second half of the month.

I agree Glaus could use a few DL days off those knees. The problem is it might not help. If he can’t drive with his legs, he just isn’t going to be any help at all.

Where did they assign Wilkin Ramirez?

Lineup today:
Conrad – 5
Heyward – 9
Infante – 4
McCann – 2
Hinske – 3
Gonzalez – 6
Ankiel – 8
Cabrerra – 7
Hanson – 1

Great to see Ankiel Hustled on down. As to the Glaus thing, It’s nice to finally see all of you Ziffer-come-latelies finally on board with what i have been saying for the last month. Kinda reminds me of the whole McLouth thing.

Better late than never Bill. Enjoy the game today…
