Medlen recalled; Livan designated

The Braves have ended the Livan Hernandez experiment by designating the veteran hurler to make room for the return of Kris Medlen.

Medlen will likely rejoin the Atlanta bullpen after spending the past couple of weeks with Triple-A Gwinnett. Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez will provide more information about his plans for Medlen when he meets with the media later this afternoon.

Everybody will agree that Medlen essentially wasted his time while spending the past two weeks stretching his arm out in preparation to return to the Majors as a starting pitcher.  But Gonzalez indicated on Wednesday that he likely will not remove Mike Minor or Randall Delgado from the starting rotation.

Two weeks ago when the Braves sent Medlen to Gwinnett to make a few starts, Minor and Delgado were both struggling and giving the club reason to look for other options.

Hernandez had never served as a reliever before agreeing to join the Braves hours after the Astros designated him for assignment in late March.  He posted a 2.73 ERA while allowing opponents to reach base at a .327 clip during his first 16 appearances of the year.  But he allowed nine earned in the 4 2/3 innings that he completed in his past two outings.

Looks like no one actually expected Delgado or Minor to show out like they’ve done.

I understand the Braves’ need to be prepared, but at the same time I wonder how many innings they’ve taken out of his arm this year.

What a pathetic front office. Kris Medlen is a stand up guy, who somehow lost his starting role to a couple of kids who have been wildly inconsistent because he got injured. That is verboten in baseball if you have credible management. I mean the guy, did everything the team asked of him, and is still doing it and you shat on him like this. I am so disgusted with our front office, I wouldn’t p*ss on them if they were on fire. They have absolutely zero credibility left with the team. We need a new owner, a GM at all and a coach who can actually look his team in the eye. Turns out the Marlins were right to sh*t can Fredo.
That decision to go with Pastornicky out of spring training is really looking brilliant too. And Livian Hernandez, what was that? Now I suppose we are gonna screw up Meds arm again by pitching him every night for the 7th and 8th inning(see Everyday Jonny). What a clown car this team management has become.

“I’m like the Matrix,” Prado jokingly said. “I’ll just download the program before I take the field.”

I love this quote and I love his attitude. It cannot be easy to go from LF to 3B then over to 1B and then go from 1B back out to LF like he did last night. Prado makes it look easy. Quickly becoming one of my all time favorite Braves!

I think it’s safe to say that the Braves need to start working on some cost certainty. Let’s get Prado and Kimbrel under long term deals now. Prado seems in line for 3-4 years in the $20-30MM range.

Agreed
