Hudson's start pushed back one day

Nate McLouth's lingering left hamstring discomfort has forced Tim Hudson to wait one more day before returning to the Braves rotation.

Braves manager Bobby Cox announced Sunday afternoon that Hudson will now pitch on Tuesday and Kawakami will start Monday's series opener against the Marlins on regular rest.  <p>

Because the rosters will expand on Tuesday, the Braves will now only have to make room on their 40-man roster for Hudson.  If he had been activated on Monday, they were seemingly going to make room for him by optioning a a position player, likely either Reid Gorecki or Kelly Johnson.

Unless a Major League position player was placed on the disabled list,  the optioned position player would have had to remain on the Minor League roster for 10 days  --  a span that comes into play because of the strong possibility that Triple-A Gwinnett will advance to the postseason.

With both McLouth and Ryan Church ailing, the Braves weren't in a position where they could afford to go without Gorecki for an extended stretch.   This injury woes may now prompt them to promote Gregor Blanco after the rosters expand.

Following Hudson's start on Tuesday, the remainder of the Braves rotation will simply be pushed back one day.  As the week progresses, the Braves will determine how to shape their rotation around the Sept. 7 off day.

On Thursday the Braves had announced that Hudson would start on Monday and that Kawakami would simply be skipped for at least one start.

After learning about this decision early Sunday evening, Kawakami immediately traveled to the Miami area to prepare for Monday night's start.

Hudson, who will be making his first start since undergoing Tommy John surgery last year, was already at the team hotel in Miami.

Church and LaRoche updates:  Cox put Church back in Sunday night's lineup with some hesitance.   The veteran outfielder's lower back is still providing a considerable amount of discomfort.

"I need a chiropractor, but I don't have one," Church said. "It's too late in the year to sit out. I'll go until it blows out or gets better."

LaRoche's right hip felt better when he awoke on Sunday morning and he that he was capable of enduring the limited amount of stress that he'll place on it while playing first base.

McLouth will receive an MRI on his left hamstring in Atlanta on Monday.

In these days of sports medicine, you would think that if Church only need a chiropracter he would have already visited that avenue. I think he's hurting worse than what he lets on and is trying to play hurt. Does anyone know if Church has received a cortisone shot or anything of the sort to relieve some of the inflammation in his lower back?

I'm worried about McLouth. I fear he may be done for the year. He's basically had this injury 4 times this year. But he hadn't really contributed that much (apart from the critical role of not being Jordan "limp wrist" Schafer), hitting only .260/.344/.419 with 6 HR, 10 SB (2 CS), and 22 RBI. The Braves can get by using Diaz, Church, and Anderson. But I really would like to see Garret Anderson get some regular rest. He's 37 years old.

Church has now been scratched from the lineup. Gorecki will start in his place.

I agree about McLouth. They would not be getting an MRI if he were making good progress. He may have a small tear in the area, or perhaps a mass of scar tissue that could be contributing to the reinjury. If he is done for a while, at least Diaz and Anderson are turning it on at the right time. The good thing is that the Braves could potentially have Infante, Anderson, Diaz, Escobar, and Prado all hitting above .300 soon. If we can get power numbers from Chipper, McCann, and LaRoche we should be ok. The pitching has been there all year, we just need one stretch of offensive output to finish out the year.

I always forget Infante when I think about the OF platoon matrix.

crewsin_usa is spot-on.

On a note about tonight's game, how many times does everyone predict that Joe Morgan will say "Jergens?"

Church is suspect. He is laying down like he was in NY. Jerry Manual had nothing good to say about Church and his work ethic.

Joe Morgan has already stepped on his pud tonite before the game even starts. He said no team has repeated as NL champ in 50 years. Maybe he missed the 90's or they didn't have a TV in his bar?

Gorecki doesn't have clue at the plate... Infante should be in center.

Yes. Gorecki shouldn't even be on the roster.

Check out this stat I just calculated:

The Phillies are 0-for-15 w/ RISP vs. Jurrjens this year. In his career he has limited them to a .154 (6-for-35) BA w/ RISP.

billreef - I can't stand Joe Morgan as much as the next guy... but his comment was referring to an NL team repeating as World Series Champs, which hasn't happened since the Reds.

he said it twice and the second time he said "no team has repeated as NL champ".

Another hard-luck loss for JJ...

Greg Norton is the worst player in all of baseball and yet Bobby Cox pinch hits him. He sucks. He stinks. I've been saying this every week since the season started, and yet the stupid Braves management continues with this loser!!!

Jair Jurrjens, Jordan Schafer, Brandon Hicks, Jo Jo Reyes for Carlos Quintin, Josh Fields, Chris Getz and Dayan Viciedo…

Frank, Make that happen...

Thanks for the lighthearted start to the morning. Billreef, did you type this while wearing your Mets' Francoeur jersey? Is this the same Jerry Manuel who manages the team that has been heavily criticized for how it has handled health and conditioning concerns over the last couple of years? I'm sorry, but I'm going to take whatever anyone from Mets' management says with a grain of salt.

Bobby Cox.

Do you actually have anything to say or is this just another demonstration of your morbid fascination with my posts? BTW I am sure the Mets management is waiting with bated breath to hear what you think of their work.

The Giants saved our bacon this weekend. It's time the Braves start creating their own destiny. We started last night playing great defense then we turned into a Little League team. Our baserunning left a little to be desired too.

I wouldn't trade Jurrjens for Ryan Howard and Jayson Werth right now. OK maybe I would but you get the point.

This offseason the only places I can see us upgrading is: Left (but Diaz has shown he can play there) 2nd (Prado has filled the void tremendously but I think we can do better) and 1st (if we don't sign LaRoche

Yeah, let's replace Prado who along with Diaz, McCann and Esky carried this team thru their best stretch of the season. Geez the guy was only hitting .340 in June and July and now he's hitting .300 and the KJ whiners are back after him. If you want a replacement why not look for a power hitting Right fielder who is midway through his contract(leaves room for Heyward)., a right handed bat for the bench. Get rid of McLouth and Church and let Infante and Shafer fight it out for CF. Bring up conrad to play utility and either resign Laroche or get a power bat for 1st.

Damn GA just caught a ball in the outfield, that was worth watching the whole game to see!!!
